Mölltaler Glacier Piste Map and Overview
Mölltaler Gletscher is a standout choice for skiers and snowboarders who want dependable high-altitude snow and a properly alpine feel without the scale – or crowds – of Austria’s mega-resorts. Carinthia’s only glacier ski area rises to 3,122 m / 10,243 ft, with broad, open pistes above the treeline and superb views across a ring of 3,000-metre peaks. The glacier setting supports an unusually long season, making it especially appealing for early-season trips, spring laps and snow-sure holidays.
The terrain is compact but varied: confident intermediates have plenty of wide red cruising, advanced riders can seek out the steeper Alteck sector, and snowboarders have a dedicated funpark with features including kickers, jumps and banked turns. It is also a serious-performance mountain – the Austrian and German national alpine teams use it for training – so expect well-prepared pistes and rewarding, fast carving terrain.

Is it good for beginners?
Yes, with a caveat. There are gentle blue pistes and a meaningful beginner allocation, plus the benefit of reliable snow. However, Mölltaler is better suited to beginners who are progressing beyond their first lessons than to complete first-timers: much of its appeal is in its red terrain, and glacier weather can occasionally mean flat light or wind. It is an especially good fit for mixed groups where beginners can build confidence while intermediates and advanced riders still have engaging terrain.
What’s included in the Ski Pass?
- A Mölltaler Gletscher local ski pass covers the lifts and marked pistes within the Mölltaler Glacier ski area—the simplest and most economical option if you are skiing only here.
- It does not automatically include multiple resorts; the standard local ticket is for Mölltaler Gletscher only.
- A broader SkiHit pass is available for visitors who want a multi-resort ticket. It covers around 168 km / 104 miles of pistes across seven East Tyrol ski areas, including Mölltaler Gletscher and Ankogel.
- Therefore, you do not have to buy a whole-area pass: choose the local Mölltaler ticket for a lower-cost, single-resort stay, or upgrade to SkiHit if you plan to ski several participating mountains.
Does the ski pass include multiple resorts?
Yes. The standard Hochkönig ski pass includes access to several interconnected ski villages and sectors:
- Mühlbach am Hochkönig
- Maria Alm
- Dienten
- Hintermoos
- Hinterthal
All areas are linked by lifts and pistes and operate as one connected ski domain.
Are there cheaper ski pass options?
Yes – there are several ways to reduce the cost of skiing at Mölltaler Gletscher without buying the full multi-resort SkiHit pass:
- Afternoon passes: A good-value option for arrival days or a shorter day on the mountain.
- Low-season passes: Multi-day tickets are generally cheaper outside the busiest Christmas, New Year and peak winter periods.
- Child, youth and senior reductions: Discounted categories are available for younger skiers, children and seniors, while very young children may ski free when accompanied by a parent.
- Multi-day local passes: If you are skiing Mölltaler Gletscher for several days, a local multi-day ticket usually works out better than buying individual day passes.
- Online booking: Checking the official online shop before you travel can unlock the best available rate or promotional pricing.
- Local pass instead of SkiHit: The standard Mölltaler Gletscher pass covers this resort only and is typically the most cost-effective choice if you do not plan to ski elsewhere.
The wider SkiHit pass is only worthwhile if you intend to visit several participating resorts, including Mölltaler Gletscher, Ankogel, Kals–Matrei, Sillian or St. Jakob. If your holiday is based entirely at Mölltaler, choose the local pass rather than paying for access to the full network.
