Ankogel Piste Map and Overview
Tucked away in the stunning Hohe Tauern National Park, Ankogel is one of Austria’s hidden gems for skiers and snowboarders who want breathtaking alpine scenery without the crowds of the mega-resorts. The resort is especially loved for its long vertical descents, wide-open pistes, and authentic mountain atmosphere. With slopes reaching over 2,600 metres, snow conditions stay reliable throughout the winter season, while the peaceful surroundings make it feel far more relaxed and uncrowded than many larger Austrian ski destinations.
Ankogel is particularly popular with intermediate and advanced riders thanks to its challenging terrain and impressive freeride opportunities. Snowboarders enjoy the natural flow of the mountain, while confident skiers can tackle steep black runs and scenic high-alpine descents with incredible panoramic views. Beginners are still catered for with easier slopes lower down the mountain, making the resort a great option for mixed-ability groups looking for a quieter and more traditional Austrian ski experience.

Ski Season Length and Dates
The ski season at Ankogel usually runs from late December through late March, with excellent snow coverage thanks to the resort’s high altitude. Typical operating dates are around 20 December to late March, although this can vary slightly depending on snowfall and weather conditions each year.
Is it good for beginners?
Ankogel is better suited to intermediate and advanced skiers overall, but beginners can still enjoy the resort thanks to the gentler slopes near the valley station. The quieter atmosphere is ideal for learners who want to avoid busy pistes and lift queues. However, compared to larger family-focused ski areas, there are fewer dedicated beginner zones, so complete first-timers may find the terrain slightly more challenging once they progress beyond the nursery slopes.
