Cannon Mountain Piste Map and Overview
Cannon Mountain Ski Area in Franconia Notch State Park is one of New Hampshire’s most iconic ski destinations, known for its bold terrain, historic aerial tram, and stunning mountain vistas. As the highest ski area summit in the state, it offers a thrilling 2,180 ft (664 m) vertical drop – nearly unmatched in the region. With 97 trails across two distinct zones – Cannon and Mittersill – the resort caters to all ability levels, although it’s particularly celebrated for its challenging expert terrain and glade options. The inclusion of New Hampshire’s only aerial tram and a high-speed quad makes for efficient uphill travel and unforgettable summit views.
Cannon also scores high marks for its natural charm and independent spirit. Operated by the state, it retains a classic, no-frills vibe with modest crowds and a focus on pure skiing, rather than commercial bustle. Its snowmaking covers most high-traffic terrain, helping maintain consistent conditions even in lean times – and it’s a training ground for notable skiers like Olympic gold medalist Bode Miller. While lift infrastructure in some areas remains traditional, the tram and quad lifts offer quick, wind-protected access to top-tier terrain. And with lower traffic than nearby corporate resorts, Cannon provides an authentic and rewarding skiing experience.
