Portes du Soleil Ski Map

Portes du Soleil is a dream destination for skiers and snowboarders alike — it’s one of the largest ski areas in the world, straddling the French–Swiss border and linking together 12 resorts in a spectacular, seamless playground. With a single lift pass, you can glide from charming French villages like Morzine, Les Gets, Châtel and Abondance into Swiss hideaways like Champéry, Les Crosets and Morgins. The terrain is wonderfully diverse: gentle, wide cruisers through forested valleys, challenging red runs for intermediates, and steep bowls or mogul sections for the more adventurous. On top of that, snowparks, ski-cross zones, and off-piste opportunities make it a fantastic spot for freestyle lovers and freeriders too.

What makes Portes du Soleil truly special is its scale balanced with character. Even though it’s massive, the resorts retain an authentic Alpine feel – think timber chalets, mountain hospitality, and less of the mega-resort gloss. The atmospheric villages are perfect for winding down after a day on the slopes, with a mix of laid-back eateries, cosy bars and traditional mountain charm. Plus, the cross-border nature gives you an added sense of adventure: you’re not just skiing a single resort – you’re exploring a whole mountain region, over two countries, with endless possible routes and escape options.

Ski Season Length and Dates

The ski season in Portes du Soleil typically runs from mid-December to mid or late April, though the exact dates can vary depending on snow conditions. For the 2024/25 season, for example, the press pack notes an opening from 21 December 2024 to 20 April 2025.

What’s included in the Portes du Soleil Ski Pass?

  • The Portes du Soleil ski pass gives you access to a massive ski domain: around 600 km of pistes, 208 lifts, and 12 linked resorts across France and Switzerland.
  • The 12 resorts included are: Abondance, Avoriaz 1800, Champéry, Châtel, La Chapelle d’Abondance, Les Gets, Montriond, Morzine / Avoriaz, Saint-Jean d’Aulps, Morgins, Torgon, and Val-d’Illiez / Les Crosets / Champoussin.
  • There are cheaper, more limited ski pass options: for example, a local Morzine-Les Gets pass covers only that area (120 km of pistes) and does not include Avoriaz or the Swiss resorts.
  • Another local pass is for Avoriaz only, which gives access to the Avoriaz lifts but doesn’t cover areas like Châtel or Switzerland.

Is it good for beginners?

Yes – Portes du Soleil is very beginner-friendly. Around 310 km of its slopes are classified as easy (blue or green), giving plenty of mellow terrain for first-timers or those still building confidence. The network of linked resorts makes it great for beginners to explore without feeling trapped, and many of the lower-altitude villages offer gentle nursery slopes and dedicated learning zones. Snow cannons and well-groomed pistes help ensure consistent conditions, which is reassuring for novice skiers or snowboarders.
