Centered around the legendary Aiguille du Midi above Chamonix, this area is widely considered one of the world’s greatest ski and snowboard destinations because of its unmatched high-alpine terrain, dramatic scenery, and legendary off-piste routes. Riders come from across the globe to descend the Vallée Blanche glacier run, explore steep couloirs, and experience lift-accessed backcountry that feels like true expedition skiing without requiring days of touring.
Another reason it stands out is variety. The Chamonix valley (see map below) combines several distinct ski sectors, each with its own character – from wide sunny cruisers to extreme freeride faces. Advanced riders especially love it for its challenge and scale, while intermediates enjoy long scenic pistes and beginners can learn in dedicated zones with Mont Blanc towering overhead. Few destinations combine prestige, terrain diversity, and scenery at this level.

Is it good for beginners?
Yes – but selectively. While the region is famous for expert terrain, beginner zones at Le Tour and Les Houches offer gentle slopes, progression areas, and excellent ski schools. True novices can learn comfortably, though the overall reputation of the valley is more advanced-focused.
