Portes du Soleil Ski Map

The Portes du Soleil ski area spans across the French‑Swiss border and links together 12‑plus resorts, making it one of the largest inter‑connected ski and snowboard domains in the world. With its 600 km of skiing and 208 lifts, this has been one of the world’s largest ski areas for more than 50 years, and is only one hour from Geneva. What makes it especially appealing is the sheer variety: wide open cruisers, forested slopes, high alpine bowl sections and terrain that keeps evolving as you move from valley to valley. That means you can spend a whole holiday exploring new pistes and still feel fresh every day.

For snowboarders the appeal is equally strong: with numerous snowparks, fun zones, boardercross tracks and freeride‑friendly glades, you’ll find terrain that suits playful carving, freestyle tricks or seeking out fresh snow off‑piste. Coupled with modern lift infrastructure, charming alpine villages (both French and Swiss), and the novelty of skiing “from one resort to another”, Portes du Soleil delivers big on experience, terrain and accessibility.

The Portes du Soleil ski area connects 12 main resorts across France and Switzerland. The most commonly referenced ones are:

French resorts:

  • Morzine
  • Avoriaz
  • Les Gets
  • Chatel
  • Montriond
  • Saint-Jean-d’Aulps

Swiss resorts:

  • Champéry
  • Morgins
  • Torgon
  • Les Crosets
  • Val-d’Illiez
  • La Chapelle d’Abondance

These resorts are linked by lifts and pistes, allowing skiers and snowboarders to traverse from one to another without needing transport outside the ski area.

Ski Season Length and Dates

The winter season generally runs from early/mid December through to mid‑April, though exact dates vary with snow and locality. For example, the resort of Avoriaz (in Portes du Soleil) lists an opening from around 12th  December 2025 and closing around 19 th April 2026. Some sectors may open earlier if snow allows, and some might close earlier in spring if conditions soften. This gives a solid 4–5 month season when you can expect good lift access and piste coverage.

Is it good for beginners?

Yes – quite good. The Portes du Soleil area offers many gentle slopes, dedicated beginner zones, and ski schools catering to newcomers. For instance, Avoriaz is described as “well known as a family friendly ski resort and a great place for beginner skiers and snowboarders” with several green pistes and lots of blue terrain for progression. While some areas are more challenging (and you’ll want to check the map), if you’re a beginner you’ll appreciate the variety of easier terrain, the connectivity so you won’t feel stuck on one small area, and the infrastructure that supports newcomers (ski hire, lessons, green zones).
